In today’s digital world, protecting your personal and financial information is more critical than ever. One important tool that can help safeguard your identity and financial data is the IRS Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN).

The IP PIN is a unique six-digit number that adds an extra layer of security when filing your tax returns. Without it, someone could file a fraudulent tax return using your Social Security number — and potentially collect your refund! By requiring this additional verification step, the IRS makes it harder for scammers to access your tax information or manipulate your return.

While it may sound complex, obtaining an IP PIN is a simple process and well worth the investment of your time.

How to Get an IRS IP PIN

The fastest way to obtain an IP PIN is through your IRS Online Account, which requires an ID.me login. If you already use ID.me for other government services, such as Social Security or the NJ Senior Freeze program, you can use the same credentials. (If you don’t have an ID.me account, you’ll need to create one first).

Once your identity is verified, you’ll receive your IP PIN, which will change annually. If you sign up for continuous enrollment, no additional action is needed on your part. We will need your IP PIN in order to submit your tax returns.

Stay Ahead of Tax Fraud

If you’ve been a victim of identity theft or simply want to add an extra layer of protection to your tax records, applying for an IRS IP PIN is a proactive step worth taking. It’s a fast and effective way to secure your tax return and prevent fraud before it happens.

The team at Lighthouse Financial Advisors is here to help if you have any questions about obtaining your IP PIN or need assistance navigating the process.
